Caltrain reported a significant increase in ridership, with December 2024 seeing over 588,000 passengers, a remarkable 41% jump from December 2023. The rise follows the introduction of electric service in September 2024. Average weekday ridership rose nearly 39%, with substantial weekend increases as well. This surge is attributed to faster, more convenient service delivered through Caltrain's historic electrification project, marking a notable change from traditional diesel systems to electric rail, enhancing passenger experience with new amenities and quieter journeys.
Electric service is continuing to deliver on its promise, said Caltrain Executive Director Michelle Bouchard. We are providing a fast, convenient, modern service, and many people who are tired of sitting in gridlock on 101 are getting onboard and experiencing the future of travel firsthand.
Caltrain's historic electrification project was the first undertaking in North America in a generation in which diesel trains and their infrastructure components are transitioned to an electrified system.
