2 NY prisons thrown into chaos as corrections officers launch illegal strike after violent uprising
Briefly

Amid poor working conditions and a recent violent uprising, corrections officers at two New York state prisons engaged in illegal strikes, disrupting operations. The strikes led to visitation cancellations as the Department of Corrections condemned the actions and emphasized their illegality. The union, NYSCOPBA, clarified they did not endorse the strikes, stressing that discontent among staff fueled the protests. Lawmaker George Borrello supported the officers, stating that unsafe working conditions had escalated to a crisis for the prison system.
The job actions initiated by some rogue NYSCOPBA members at Collins and Elmira Correctional Facilities this morning are illegal and unlawful," said Department of Corrections and Community Supervision spokesman Thomas Mailey.
NYSCOPBA insisted it did not sanction the illegal job actions at Collins and the maximum-security Elmira.
The dangerous and deteriorating working conditions within our state prisons have reached a crisis point," said state Sen. George Borrello.
