Orwell's vision remains relevant. 1984 illustrates the mechanisms of authoritarian control: the power to define truth, suppress individuality, and instill fear.
The prescience of Orwell and Huxley is downright unsettling, and their work remains as relevant today as it was decades ago.
Sadly, there's no statewide mandate in Texas for students to read these books; I hope parents are stepping up to fill the gap.
