Martin Keown reflects on his early career at Arsenal and how advice from his father helped him navigate the club’s heavy drinking culture. Despite the club's success in the late 80s and early 90s, Keown stayed focused on his footballing ambitions, aware of the consequences of excessive drinking and gambling. He speaks candidly about his disapproval of teammates who indulged, including a fellow apprentice who lost a substantial amount of money in the card school. Keown also recalls challenging manager George Graham about the club's culture, highlighting his strong values from a young age.
When I saw people drinking excessively I lost some respect for them. I was very much in the minority at Arsenal.
I was this young pro of 19, getting annoyed with Charlie Nicholas for changing into his leather trousers on the bus home.
