Timber, a woodworker at Two Rock School of Woodworking in California, reflects on their journey from feeling out of place in Miami during the 1980s to finding acceptance and personal expression in the Bay Area. Influenced by their grandfather and motivated by their queerness, Timber developed a fascination with the interaction of nature and craftsmanship. Their teaching emphasizes the importance of learning woodworking with respect, while recent projects reflect deeper social themes, particularly inspired by the notion that 'rest is resistance,' which shaped a series of artworks addressing community and dreams for a better future.
The connection between craftsperson and wood is immediate. This is how I found my true identity as it mirrors my life's journey of self-discovery.
Teaching others has become as important as the craft itself, as it allows me to share the reverence I hold for this work.
