The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is revising its body camera policy following reports that crucial footage from the investigation of a fatal boat crash was deleted due to misclassification. The officers involved had labeled the video as ‘incidental,’ triggering an automatic deletion after 90 days. The FWC admitted this was a mistake and acknowledged that their existing policies did not align with investigative needs. Consequently, they are undertaking a review to clarify categorization expectations and improve oversight in such situations.
The FWC stated that officer-worn body camera policy is being revised after two incidents of footage from a fatal boat crash went missing due to misclassification.
'It is clear that the policy did not align with our intent for our officers' documentation responsibilities,' said FWC spokesperson, acknowledging gaps in the existing policy.
The FWC now recognizes the confusion created by the officers' actions being within existing policy while simultaneously acknowledging it did not meet their documentation standards.
Sklute emphasized that the deletion of footage, categorized incorrectly, arose from 'human error' and is prompting a comprehensive review of their monitoring process.
