The Tampa Bay Rays announced that they will not proceed with a $1.3 billion baseball stadium project in St. Petersburg, primarily due to unforeseen events since October, as stated by owner Stuart Sternberg. The plan was initially promising, having received local government approval for funding, but challenges—including Hurricane Milton damaging Tropicana Field—have hindered progress. The team plans to use the Yankees' spring training facility in Tampa for the upcoming season, while the city works on restoration plans for Tropicana Field, which is not projected to be playable until 2026.
"After careful deliberation, we have concluded we cannot move forward with the new ballpark and development project at this moment," Sternberg said.
"A series of events beginning in October that no one could have anticipated led to this difficult decision."
"Our commitment to the vitality and success of the Rays organization is unwavering. We continue to focus on finding a ballpark solution that serves the best interests of our region."
"Tropicana Field sustained significant damage in October due to Hurricane Milton, rendering the stadium unplayable in 2025."
