Five fishers, three from Peru and two from Colombia, endured a harrowing 55 days adrift in the Pacific Ocean after their boat's alternator malfunctioned. The issues arose just days after departing from Pucusana Bay, rendering communication and navigation tools useless. Surviving on minimal resources, they resorted to drinking rainwater, sea water, and catching fish. They were finally rescued by an Ecuadorian vessel on May 7 and are now in stable condition, with arrangements being made for their return home. This incident follows a prior case of a Peruvian fisher who survived 95 days alone at sea.
To survive, they had to take rusted water out of the engine and when a fish passed by, they caught it and parboiled it to eat.
We had no power on the boat. They had no starter, lights and everything that a battery generates, she said.
