"The discovery of numerous sets of human remains along Long Island's South Shore beginning in late 2010 set off a search for a potential serial killer that drew global interest."
"Heuermann was arrested in 2023 after a DNA match. Detectives identified Heuermann as a suspect in 2022 using a vehicle registration database."
Rex Heuermann, an architect, pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder and four counts of intentional murder related to the Gilgo Beach killings. He admitted to killing eight women between 1993 and 2010, including strangling and dismembering some victims. Heuermann's arrest in 2023 followed a DNA match. The remains of several victims were discovered along Long Island's South Shore, leading to a prolonged investigation that raised doubts among families. Heuermann will be sentenced to life in prison without parole in June.
