Colorado State University's initial forecast for the Atlantic hurricane season predicts 17 named storms, including nine hurricanes, four of which could be major. The likelihood of major hurricanes impacting the U.S. coast and Caribbean is above average due to factors like warmer sea surface temperatures and transitioning ENSO conditions. The probabilities for specific regions are notably higher than average, emphasizing the need for preparedness among coastal residents.
"We anticipate an above-average probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the continental United States coastline and in the Caribbean," said Phil Klotzbach.
"A warmer-than-normal tropical Atlantic combined with likely ENSO neutral (or potential La Niña) conditions typically provides a more conducive dynamic and thermodynamic environment for hurricane formation and intensification," Klotzbach explained.
