Eunice Flowers, an entrepreneur and author from Little Haiti, is dedicated to educating children about the rich Black history of her neighborhood. Concerned that her own children and others are not receiving adequate education on this history, Flowers created a book series called "Maya and Xavier's Adventures." The series follows two children visiting significant sites in Little Haiti. Her efforts aim to preserve the cultural identity of the area, which is threatened by gentrification, emphasizing the importance of understanding and appreciating Black heritage among younger generations.
"When I was a child, we were taught to be proud to be Black," said the Miami native who was born in Little Haiti.
"I want to preserve that," she said. "The fact that that's where we were made to belong, that was our place."
Flowers decided to create Maya and Xavier's Adventures, a book series that chronicles elementary school children as they visit historically significant sites in Miami's Black history.
She's particularly concerned that they - and other kids in Miami - aren't learning the Black history that surrounds them.
