Pinecrest food scraps, carefully composted, bound for Miccosukee garden in pilot project
Briefly

The village of Pinecrest launched the Everglades Earth Cycle, a pilot project converting food scraps into nutrient-rich compost for the Miccosukee Tribe. Funded by a $400,000 USDA grant, this is the first significant compost initiative from a local government in Miami-Dade County. In just a year, Pinecrest collected 90,000 pounds of food waste from three drop-off sites, aiming to expand the program. This initiative highlights a growing community responsibility towards environmental sustainability by turning waste into a valuable resource for gardening.
The project called the "Everglades Earth Cycle" is the first large-scale compost program in the county sponsored by a local government.
It really has fostered a sense of environmental responsibility in our community," said Shannon del Prado, a Pinecrest council member.
Food scraps from the Pinecrest Library drop-off location are dumped into a composting truck on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, in Pinecrest, Florida.
The village has already collected 90,000 pounds of food waste in just one year.
