Miami-Dade commission defies mayor, votes again to end adding fluoride to water
Briefly

On May 6, 2025, the Miami-Dade County Commission voted to end the fluoridation of drinking water, overriding Mayor Daniella Levine Cava's veto. This decision follows a wave of discontent among residents who perceive government fluoride addition as harmful. The commission's vote coincides with a statewide legislative movement aimed at banning fluoride in all Florida water supplies. The state legislation, having passed on April 29, 2025, awaits the governor's signature and would become effective from July 1, further catalyzing local changes in health policy regarding fluoride use.
With the state poised to ban fluoride addition in water, Miami-Dade County has followed suit, ending its fluoridation program with an 8-4 vote.
Commissioner Roberto Gonzalez stated, 'We made a decision for the people. And the people are sick and tired... because their government has been poisoning them.'
