Miami Beach's mayor, Steven Meiner, halted an effort to defund and evict O Cinema, an arts theater screening the Oscar-winning documentary "No Other Land." This film, which reveals the story of a Palestinian town bulldozed by Israel for military use, faced pushback from Meiner who labeled it "hateful propaganda." Following significant community support for the cinema and the film, including a well-attended city commission meeting, the mayor ultimately decided to withdraw his resolution after many commissioners expressed concerns over censorship and artistic freedom.
"It's not propaganda and it's certainly not antisemitic to portray it. They are documented realities. Silencing them does not make them untrue."
"The first amendment is clear. Government must never censor artistic expression, even when it is controversial or deeply offensive."
