Yaquelin Dominguez-Nieves, a Cuban woman, was sentenced to seven and a half years for her involvement in a smuggling operation that caused the deaths of 16 migrants, many of whom were children. The boat, carrying 18 migrants, sank due to overcrowding and lack of experience of the captain. Dominguez-Nieves, who had recently entered the U.S., pleaded guilty to conspiracy related to the tragedy and had collected over $11,500 from families for the trip while having suffered years of abuse from her boyfriend, who pressured her into organizing the smuggling.
"According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida, Dominguez-Nieves had entered the United States unlawfully just a month earlier."
"Three of the victims' bodies later washed ashore in Monroe County. The official cause of death was drowning."
