Barnes & Noble in West Kendall, a prominent bookstore since 1996, faces potential closure as a new site plan proposes to replace it with a massive Rooms to Go furniture store. The proposal outlines the takeover of the 3.8-acre site, with plans for a showroom exceeding 51,000 square feet. Rooms to Go officials express enthusiasm about the location, seeing it as a beneficial expansion into the West Kendall market. This transition highlights the changing retail landscape and the shift from bookstores to furniture showrooms in Florida's commercial spaces.
The 55,824-square-foot Barnes & Noble opened Thanksgiving week in 1996 and was called 'one of the biggest, flashiest Barnes & Noble bookstores in the nation' by the Miami Herald.
Peter Weitzner, a Rooms to Go vice president, told the South Florida Business Journal the chain entered into a contract for the site because the space suited the company.
The new Rooms to Go showroom, with more than 51,000 square feet, would be considered a superstore - most other stores are in the 40,000 range.
We think this location is fantastic. It's an area we aren't serving yet. We have been looking in the West Kendall area for a while and we feel like we have found an amazing spot.
