A brush fire in southern Miami-Dade escalated rapidly to 24,000 acres, spurred by dry and windy conditions. Although neighborhoods are safe, officials warned of potential smoky health effects. Residents were advised to limit outdoor activities. Key roads including Card Sound Road and U.S. 1 faced closures to manage the situation. Containment efforts, particularly challenging in marshy terrain, focused on creating firebreaks to halt the fire's spread, which is currently about a third contained according to fire officials.
"If that fire is currently at 20% or 30% containment, that means 20% or 30% of that total perimeter now has some kind of control line..." said David Godwin.
"We advise residents to limit their time outdoors, keep the windows and doors of their homes closed, and recirculate their air conditioning..." according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
