The Dolphins intend to secure a veteran cornerback, maintaining interest in Rasul Douglas and tracking Asante Samuel Jr.'s recovery. Other potential additions include Stephon Gilmore, James Bradberry, and Mike Hilton. Recently, Miami added safeties Minkah Fitzpatrick, Ifeatu Melifonwu, and Ashtyn Davis. Fitzpatrick's performance last season raised concerns, permitting a high passer rating and allowing a significant completion rate. Despite these issues, he was still ranked somewhat favorably among NFL safeties, although he was noted as not being the best safety on his previous team.
Last year was a down year for Fitzpatrick; he permitted a 127 passer rating in his coverage area, down from excellent numbers the previous five years.
Fitzpatrick permitted 31 of 41 passes to be caught for 370 yards, the 19th most yards allowed by any NFL safety, with one interception.
Despite the poor passer-rating-against numbers, PFF ranked him 52nd among 171 NFL safeties, down from 20th in 2023 and third in 2022.
NFL Network's Brian Baldinger stated that Fitzpatrick wasn't even the Steelers' best safety last season, indicating a significant drop in performance.
