Omar Fernandez, a high-ranking jail official in Miami-Dade County, was arrested for DUI following a two-car accident where he was found sleeping in the passenger seat of a Toyota Camry. The accident involved a Hyundai Palisade driven by Janette Perez. Upon arrival, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper detected the odor of alcohol on Fernandez and he subsequently failed three field sobriety tests. Breath tests revealed his blood alcohol content to be .236 and .231, leading to his arrest. He has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
Around 8:50 p.m., a Florida Highway Patrol trooper arrived at the site of a car crash and found Omar Fernandez, 50, sleeping in the passenger seat of a white Toyota Camry.
Fernandez crashed into a 2020 Hyundai Palisade driven by Janette Perez, who was with her 14-year-old son at the time of the incident.
Fernandez failed three field sobriety exercises and blew .236 and .231 on a breath test, nearly three times over the legal limit.
Following the incident, Omar Fernandez was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
