Fort Lauderdale to Spring Breakers: Come on down, but follow the rules
Briefly

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is preparing to welcome Spring Break crowds this year, unlike Miami Beach, which has distanced itself from the event. Mayor Dean Trantalis emphasizes that the city has transformed its image by attracting a more upscale demographic since the chaotic days of the '80s. Fort Lauderdale offers a safer experience for college students seeking sun and fun at a time when many are escaping snowy weather. While some speculate about an influx of Miami Beach visitors, the mayor insists the cities attract different crowds.
During a beachfront news conference on Wednesday, Mayor Dean Trantalis says Fort Lauderdale is expecting another large Spring Break crowd this year. We welcome all tourists.
We did that once in the '80s, he said. We changed the dynamic. It's no longer a free-for-all. Kids were spending $100 a week to stay in a hotel.
The typical person who goes to Miami Beach doesn't always come here, he said. I don't know if we have the same cool factor.
This is a great time in which Fort Lauderdale shines. It's a safe place for kids from all over to get away from 20-degree weather.
