The Miami City Commission is set to vote on a controversial proposal to discontinue biweekly recycling services due to alarming contamination rates, which have exceeded 70% in some neighborhoods. The Solid Waste Department cites issues with residents improperly disposing of non-recyclable materials, causing entire loads to be rendered unusable. If passed, the legislation would empower the department director to determine recycling frequency and types of services offered, albeit with alternatives for residents to drop off uncontaminated materials. Along with recycling cuts, the city's bulky waste pickup service would also be reduced.
If the City Commission gives its approval Thursday, the legislation would need to come back for a final vote at a later date.
Unfortunately, findings show that contamination levels in some areas exceed 70%, which means that more than two-thirds of the materials placed in recycling bins cannot be processed.
