Why is healthcare design so painful?
Briefly

Navigating healthcare can be frustrating, as illustrated by a personal experience with a German doctor. The author compares healthcare systems in Sweden, the U.S., and Germany, highlighting that none effectively prioritize human-centered design, despite their varying structures. This is important since many interactions across these systems leave patients feeling stressed rather than cared for. The complexities of healthcare, including regulations, finances, and varying stakeholder interests, complicate patients' experiences, leading to dissatisfaction and confusion about the treatment process.
Just relax. Those were the words I heard as I sat on the examination table, and the confident, older German doctor exited my exam room.
Most people would agree that healthcare systems, no matter where you live, are incredibly complex.
Having experienced three different healthcare systems in my life, I can confidently tell you that none of them seem to favor human-centered design.
As a designer, I'm passionate about human-centered design and creation experiences that uplift, empower, and help people.
