A childhood case involved intense fear that impure thoughts during a walk would harm family, prompting repeated restarts until a diagnosis of obsessive compulsive disorder at age 10. The individual now researches child and adolescent mental health at the University of Oxford. OCD affects about 1–4% of the population, while reports among 16–24 year olds in England have more than tripled in a decade, making it the second-most widespread mental health disorder for young adults. Intrusive thoughts often clash with personal values and can involve fears of harm, sexuality, or taboo identities.
