Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) affect approximately one in five new birthing parents, mainly mothers. PMADs include depression, anxiety, OCD, and occasionally psychosis. Despite their prevalence, stigma prevents many from seeking support.
Stigma surrounding postpartum mental health leaves many untreated PMAD sufferers without professional help for years. As a result, many mothers feel unable to answer surveys about their mental health accurately.
Approximately 50% of mothers in our study felt they couldn’t answer postpartum mental health screening surveys honestly due to pressure and fear of judgment, highlighting the pervasive stigma.
Out of the mothers surveyed, four in five expressed discomfort discussing their mental health struggles with their partners, indicating a significant barrier to seeking necessary support in their lives.
