A recent report by the United Negro College Fund reveals that students from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and predominantly Black institutions (PBIs) experience higher levels of happiness and a greater sense of belonging than their peers in predominantly white institutions (PWIs). The study analyzed data from the Healthy Minds Study, showing that 45% of HBCU and PBI students displayed positive mental health, notably exceeding the 36% of college students overall. The research emphasizes the supportive environment HBCUs provide, contributing to lower rates of anxiety and depression among their students.
HBCUs have a long tradition of being centers of excellence and academic achievement, but this work also highlights that HBCUs are much more than that.
Among HBCU and PBI students, 45 percent demonstrated positive mental health according to the Flourishing Scale, contrasting with only 36 percent of college students overall.
