Brittany G., a Santa Clara resident diagnosed with type 1 bipolar disorder at 19, has turned her challenging experiences into a positive force for others. Working as a peer connector in the NAMI-SCC Community Peer Program, Brittany provides support and mentorship to individuals facing mental health hurdles. This self-referral program, which has assisted 680 community members since 2017, emphasizes peer support to cultivate independence and confidence. Brittany values the program's impact on her recovery, enabling her to make meaningful connections and share the wisdom gained from her journey, including previous struggles with homelessness and traumatic brain injury.
"Now I get to help people, Brittany says. By me just being myself, I am able to make such an impact."
"There are so many points in my journey and my recovery that I would have benefited from someone else with a lived experience. I was just so alone."
