Recent research shows that perfectionism, characterized by intense self-criticism and high performance standards, contributes to greater levels of depression and suicidal thoughts. Intriguingly, individuals with perfectionist traits tend to show less improvement in various psychosocial treatments. This is largely due to the self-critical nature of perfectionism, which may hinder the therapeutic alliance and lead to unrealistic expectations regarding progress in therapy. Thus, although perfectionists may engage diligently with treatment, their emotional struggles can limit their overall success in achieving mental wellness.
