Mental health workers at Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles are striking for nearly six months to demand equal pay and benefits, alongside improved working conditions. In a significant escalation, eight workers initiated a hunger strike as a desperate measure to amplify their plight. Adriana Webb, one of the strikers, discussed the physical impacts of fasting, while Aida Valdivia emphasized the seriousness of their cause. Support from other unions has been crucial, and the strike highlights ongoing issues in mental health care labor relations at Kaiser Permanente.
Aida Valdivia stated, "Having to do the hunger strike was a more escalated effort on our part to let them know that we are serious, especially if we are willing to sacrifice."
Nurse David Verdiner commented, "The bigger thing is that you feel fine today. But, you know, your body's going through withdrawals, right? You're used to eating three meals a day."
