Kush destroys them': the Guinean rehab clinic tackling a drug epidemic
Briefly

At SAJED-Guinee, the only private drug rehabilitation center in Guinea, Dr. Marie Koumbassa and her team are devoted to addressing a national drug crisis despite their unpaid status. They have seen a significant rise in the use of 'kush', a dangerous mixture leading to severe health consequences, especially among youth. The use of kush, previously rare, is increasingly infiltrating various social settings, driven by a hidden cross-border drug trade between Guinea and neighboring countries. This crisis poses a unique challenge for culturally conservative Guinea, contrasting with its neighbors known for overt drug trafficking issues.
People come here from the madrasa [Islamic schools] and tell us that scholars told them: Take this, you will read well and quickly learn', Koumbassa said, referring to kush. It actually destroys them.
Unlike its neighbours Guinea Bissau seen as a narco-state and Sierra Leone, which is the regional hub for kush, drug abuse and trafficking are not readily associated with the more culturally conservative Guinea.
