Four clinics in South Florida are participating in a nationwide trial to examine the efficacy of benfotiamine, a pharmaceutical form of vitamin B1, in treating Alzheimer's disease. The trial aims to address the observed deficit of thiamine in the brains of early Alzheimer's patients. Participants, who will be closely monitored over 18 months, will receive either benfotiamine or a placebo. The hope is that this treatment could significantly improve brain functionality by correcting thiamine deficiencies linked to memory loss and cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer's.
Participants will either get benfotiamine or a placebo pill, and researchers will follow them for 18 months, taking regular brain scans and blood tests.
This study will determine if benfotiamine can help resolve that deficiency.
