Disconnect to Connect Deeper With Yourself and Others
"According to an inaugural 2025 study by UNICEF exploring youth mental health, six in ten of Generation Z (ages 14-25) report feeling overwhelmed by news and events happening in their communities, country, and the world in general. Today's youth spend an inordinate amount of time online consuming news, among other content. And their constant online engagement is taking a toll on their well-being, causing stress and a sense of disempowerment."
"While technological innovations have improved our lives in countless ways, we must remember that they are tools. And like any tool, they can be dangerous when not used well. For example, having the Internet at our fingertips to look up something quickly is remarkable. It saves us an enormous amount of time that we can then spend on connecting with family and friends."
Youth well-being is declining globally, with a majority of Generation Z reporting overwhelm from news and events. Heavy online news consumption and constant digital engagement increase stress and produce a sense of disempowerment. Technological advances have reshaped daily life, offering conveniences while acting as tools that can be misused. Excessive screen time reduces active play and interrupts rich, in-person peer interactions, undermining physical, social, and emotional development and a sense of agency. Parental support and intentional boundaries are needed to help young people balance technology use and protect mental health.
