He said: "The more people acknowledged how I looked on steroids, the more I felt good about myself, I felt valid.""
John Whaite revealed that he took anabolic steroids illegally for five years and that they severely damaged his life and mental health. He began using steroids during lockdown after feeling intense dissatisfaction with his appearance. He lives with bulimia and body dysmorphia and said public praise of his steroid-enhanced appearance temporarily made him feel validated. He described physical consequences including acne, an unregulated sex drive and shrunken testicles. He reported suicidal feelings linked to the steroid use. He spoke out after hearing a younger family member mention a dangerously strong steroid and urged young men to respect and care for their bodies.
