As a community we can't just put it in that 'too hard, too bad' basket, and I think the announcement from the federal government shows that they don't think that either. I think it's something that gives us all hope that we're going to do better in the future.
Unlike many other countries where governments have, for decades, financed everything from intensive hospital treatment to circles of healing for paedophiles, Australia has largely been unwilling to treat paedophilia as a mental health problem. For generations, child abuse has remained in the shadows, with governments afraid of appearing soft on one of society's most heinous crimes.
