Unlike many other countries where governments have, for decades, financed everything from intensive hospital treatment to circles of healing for paedophiles, Australia has largely been unwilling to treat paedophilia as a mental health problem. For generations, child abuse has remained in the shadows, with governments afraid of appearing soft on one of society's most heinous crimes.
