"Humans have an innate need to build and maintain meaningful relationships, and in today's digital world, many of these connections increasingly unfold through technology,"
"With the rise of AI, more people are using social chatbots to explore new forms of communication or to seek companionship, emotional support, or simply, everyday interaction,"
"It doesn't quite establish causation, but it's a glaring sign of correlation - and the implications could be deep."
Data from 5,663 adults across Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Poland in 2023 included self-reported use of social chatbot services such as Replika and My AI. Mental well-being was measured with the 38-item Mental Health Inventory and compared between chatbot users and nonusers. Chatbot users exhibited higher levels of psychological distress than nonusers, producing a clear correlation between chatbot use and poorer mental health outcomes. The analysis does not establish causation but indicates that chatbot engagement aligns with increased distress and raises concerns about companionship-seeking via AI and its psychological implications.
