A Path of Empathy-One Mother's Choice to Forgive
""I forgive him because it was what Christ did. . . . The answer to hate is not hate. The answer we know from the Gospel is love-always love.""
""had been able to give and receive love, the tragedy would never have happened.""
""As a child," Scarlett says, "Jesse was protective, curious, and adventurous, a true leader.""
Scarlett Lewis created the Nurturing Healing Love message and a free global social-emotional learning curriculum that teaches love, belonging, and emotional intelligence. The approach proposes proactive prevention of mass violence through compassion, connection, and reversing marginalization. Scarlett's son Jesse was born on June 30, 2006, and displayed protective, curious, and adventurous leadership. On December 14, 2012, Jesse was murdered in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting along with twenty other students and five adults. Jesse's courage saved nine classmates when he called for them to run while the shooter reloaded. Erika Kirk expressed forgiveness for her husband's assailant, citing Gospel principles.
