Using GLP-1s to maintain a normal weight? There are benefits and risks
"because they look at me and think I'm at healthy weight, or maybe they even think I'm thin."
"I was not fast. I had massive issues; I was in physical therapy constantly. I tore my meniscus."
"I feel it in my knees, and mainly I feel it in my soul. I feel it in my confidence. It's messing with my head in a big way. I was terrified that I was going to go back to what I was."
Christie Woodard, 53, previously reached 260 pounds after obesity began in her 30s and experienced pain and injury while running. Gastric bypass surgery four years ago reduced her weight by half and enabled endurance running goals. Weight began creeping back last year despite strict diet and regular exercise, causing physical pain, reduced confidence, and fear of returning to prior weight. Her bariatric surgeon, Dr. Betsy Dovec, prescribed a low dose of Zepbound even though Woodard's BMI was in the normal range. Dr. Dovec prescribes GLP-1 medications to various patients but not for purely aesthetic reasons. GLP-1 drugs treat metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity and are becoming more available, less costly, available in pill form, and obtainable through online sellers and compounded versions.
