According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the United States spent 17.3% ($4.5 trillion) of its gross domestic product on health care costs in 2022. That figure has receded to the 17.5% level in 2019. It had been 19.5% in 2020 and 18.2% in 2021.
Among the contributing factors to high healthcare costs are high salaries for specialized physicians, the high cost of medicines, and administrative costs. If left unchecked, healthcare costs are projected to reach 20% of GDP by 2031.
