Kansas is experiencing a significant tuberculosis outbreak, with at least two fatalities and numerous infections. This unprecedented surge raises alarms about potential TB increases across the U.S., as suggested by experts. Tuberculosis primarily affects the lungs but can impact other body parts as well. Many infected may not show symptoms immediately, and a substantial number may harbor latent TB, which can become active later. The CDC’s data indicates over 9,600 cases of TB reported in 2023, highlighting ongoing public health concerns.
"It's a somber sign of what could come in any state at any point," he said, "even in California, who generally has a very good TB control program."
Not everyone infected with tuberculosis becomes ill immediately. Some people have active tuberculosis while others have inactive or latent TB.
If not treated properly, TB disease can be fatal," the CDC said.
The CDC estimated up to 13 million people in the United States have inactive tuberculosis.
