A BBC analysis shows that GP shortages mean the average GP in England now cares for 17% more patients compared to nine years ago, exacerbating access to healthcare.
Prof Kamila Hawthorne, chair of the RCGP, states that GP shortages are having a 'devastating' impact on local health populations, stressing that the increase in patients per GP is unmanageable.
Becks Fisher from the Nuffield Trust noted the variation in GP access is 'significant and unwarranted', urging that funding should better target areas with high patient-to-GP ratios.
Louise Ansari, chief executive of Healthwatch England, remarked that difficulty in accessing GP appointments remains the number-one concern for patients, reflecting ongoing healthcare challenges.
