Demodex blepharitis is a common yet often misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed eyelid disease that is caused by an overpopulation of Demodex mites, microscopic parasites that live in or near human hair follicles, such as the eyelashes. The idea of having mites on your eyelids is unsettling for most people, but Demodex mites are actually very common and naturally present on human skin. Their presence isn't due to anything a person is doing wrong—they don't discriminate based on age, ethnicity, or hygiene.
Many patients come to me complaining of irritated and red eyes, chronic itching, and a gritty sensation, which can interfere with everyday activities like reading or using screens for extended periods. However, because many of these symptoms are common in the general population, Demodex blepharitis is often mistaken for other eye diseases such as dry eye or allergic reactions, leading to delayed detection and diagnosis.
