The Medical Council of Ireland's CEO's lawyer urged that the surgeon receive a very significant sanction for failings in her care. The lawyer described the loss of Ms Sheedy's life as catastrophic and the gravest possible harm that could be caused. The lawyer stated that if Dr Lal is permitted to return to practice, his return should be subject to extensive restrictions to protect patient safety and reflect the seriousness of the failings.
