Scromiting due to marijuana use is on the rise. It's as bad as it sounds.
"They are writhing, holding their stomach, complaining of really bad abdominal pain and nausea, said Dr. Sam Wang, a pediatric emergency medicine specialist and toxicologist at Children's Hospital Colorado, who treats adolescents with the condition. They vomit and then just continue to vomit whatever they have in their stomach, which can go on for hours, Wang told CNN in a prior interview."
"Immediate treatment consists of anti-nausea medications and IV fluids to combat dehydration from the vomiting. But patients also undergo a battery of tests to rule out other causes: blood and urine tests, expensive CT scans, unpleasant upper GI endoscopy and gastric emptying tests, to name a few. For some adolescents, those tests could be repeated again and again. For some of our kids, this is their fifth ER visit in the past two months, with symptoms that they can't control, Wang said."
Cannabis hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) produces intense, repetitive vomiting and abdominal pain in habitual cannabis users, including teenagers. Affected patients often describe screaming and uncontrollable vomiting, sometimes calling it 'scromiting.' Many report temporary relief from scalding hot showers. Immediate care focuses on anti-nausea medications and intravenous fluids to treat dehydration. Diagnosis often requires extensive testing—blood and urine analyses, CT scans, upper GI endoscopy, and gastric emptying studies—to exclude other causes. Recurrent ER presentations are common, with some adolescents returning multiple times in months. Delayed treatment can lead to electrolyte imbalances, shock, organ failure, and life-threatening complications.
