Osteoarthritis develops when the cartilage cushioning the ends of bones wears down, leading to swelling, stiffness, and discomfort. It can affect any joint, but the knees are most commonly impacted. About 30% of adults over age 45 show signs of knee osteoarthritis on x-rays, and roughly half of them experience significant pain and mobility problems."
Aerobic activities such as walking, cycling, and swimming provide the most consistent pain reduction and mobility improvement for people with knee osteoarthritis. Evidence from more than 15,000 participants and over 200 studies indicates aerobic training produces the strongest short- and long-term benefits compared with other exercise types. All exercise forms are generally safe, but aerobic activity should serve as the treatment foundation. Osteoarthritis results from cartilage wear that causes swelling, stiffness, and discomfort, most often affecting knees; roughly 30% of adults over 45 show x-ray signs and about half experience significant pain and mobility problems.
