Public Health Solutions, a major nonprofit in Brooklyn, is closing two sexual and reproductive health centers by April 2025 due to staffing shortages, rising costs, and lack of funding. These centers have been crucial for underserved communities, providing free or low-cost care. The closures are part of a broader trend of reduced access to sexual health services in New York City, disproportionately affecting Black and low-income residents. Recent town halls have addressed community concerns amid these cuts, reflecting increasing operational challenges in reproductive health following the 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Apart from reproductive health care, low-cost and free sexual health care services have shrunk in New York City.
The two SRH centers in Brooklyn, which provide free or low-cost care, are set to close by April 6, 2025.
For years, PHS had released local and state-wide calls for funding in order to save the sites, but those efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.
This is because one of the largest public health nonprofits serving the city is closing its sexual and reproductive health centers.
