"Incarcerated individuals in Ontario are about 30 times more likely to die of opioid toxicity than people who aren't imprisoned," according to Dr. Claire Bodkin at the inquest.
"That was certainly higher than I expected," Bodkin said, indicating that the risk of opioid-related deaths in provincial jails is "extremely high."
"Prison health is public health," stated Dr. Bodkin, stressing the connection between inmate health and community well-being during her inquest testimony.
Bodkin identified the need for support in prison and a solid plan for success post-release to mitigate the high risk of overdose deaths.
