Tsai, who has experience as the federal Medicaid chief, is recognized for his practical understanding of public health systems and compassion for vulnerable populations, which Lurie witnessed during their walk through the Tenderloin. Tsai's previous roles involved efforts in enhancing mental health care and supporting interventions for individuals experiencing homelessness, indicating his commitment to improving community health services in San Francisco.
"He understands what it takes to make a public health system work, not just in theory, but in practice," said Lurie at the Maria X Martinez Health Resource Center.
"In our last meeting, I will say that he walked into City Hall and I looked at I said can we go walking... I knew that he was the right person to lead this department."
