LETTER: Dietitian calls for heroes to donate a kidney today
Briefly

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects more than 35 million people in the United States. When left untreated, CKD can lead to end-stage kidney disease, requiring life-sustaining dialysis or a kidney transplant.
More than 89,000 people are waiting for a kidney transplant, but just under 6,300 transplants took place in 2023 from living donors.
Dialysis can keep people with kidney disease alive, but transplantation can give someone a new, functioning kidney for life.
The success rate after a kidney transplant with a living-donor kidney was reported as 97% at one year and 86% at five years.
