""It'll be my second marathon and Tommie's first," Adam said."
""We've been training for about three months now, and it's been great. Once we got the chair, we were out every week trying to get as much road in as possible.""
""I didn't realise the wheels needed to be pumped up, so our first few runs were near impossible.""
""Tommie's the most amazing person I've ever met," Adam said. "He's so proactive and positive. I'm very honoured to be his brother.""
Adam Thornton, 24, will push his 18-year-old brother Tommie, who was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy at age two, in Tommie's first marathon. Duchenne is a progressive condition that causes muscle weakening and loss of strength. Tommie has remained active and refuses to be defined by the condition. Adam works as a radiation therapist in Dublin and trained with Tommie for about three months using a Hippocampe sports wheelchair. Initial runs were difficult until they discovered the wheelchair wheels needed air. A close friend will run alongside on race day. Tommie prepares for his Leaving Cert, swims twice weekly, stretches daily, and plays powerchair football for M&F United.
