Immunologist receives biomedical research award | Cornell Chronicle
Briefly

Ashley Nelson has received a 2023 Hartwell Individual Biomedical Research Award to explore impaired immune responses in children with asthma and their susceptibility to severe respiratory infections.
Nelson aims to investigate the processes leading to severe respiratory viral infections in children with asthma to identify potential treatment targets for reducing disease progression.
Elevated levels of IgE, an antibody associated with asthma, contribute to increased susceptibility and severity of respiratory viral infections like COVID-19. Targeting IgE has shown to reduce COVID-19 severity.
Nelson's research will focus on understanding how virus-specific IgE responses impact the progression of respiratory viral infections in children with asthma, using blood samples collected before pediatric vaccines were available.
