Hospitals hit by 'tidal wave' of winter viruses
Briefly

NHS England reported nearly 1,900 hospital beds occupied by flu patients last week, a staggering 70% increase in just one week and more than three times higher than last year.
Prof Sir Stephen Powis called the surge in flu cases a 'tidal wave,' highlighting that the NHS is also struggling with Covid, RSV, and Norovirus this winter, contributing to quad-demic concerns.
Dr Adrian Boyle mentioned that flu vaccination rates are disappointingly low this year, exacerbating the situation inside hospitals and leading to increased pressure on emergency services compared to last winter.
He warned that hospitals are already busy with around 95% of beds occupied, and even a slight increase from seasonal viruses leads to significant challenges in managing patient care.
